Branka Sinobad (born 1976, Knin, Croatia) is a Meanjin/Brisbane-based artist working across painting and drawing. She completed a Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) at the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University. Her practice explores memory and the human condition, investigating the capacity of painting and drawing to embody their continual unfolding.
Working between abstraction and figuration, Sinobad creates tactile surfaces through processes of repetition, obscuring, erasure and interruption. Marks and indexical traces of prior gestures remain embedded as ghost-like remnants, creating a somatic archive that continues to inform the evolving image. Figures, everyday forms and atmospheric elements caught in states of movement or flux—handwritten words, chairs, wheels, rollerblades, stars, wind and rain—constitute a recurring visual language throughout her work. These elements create dense, visceral compositions in which memory, presence and the act of making remain in continual dialogue.
