Branka Sinobad was born in Knin, Croatia in 1976. She lives and works in Brisbane, Australia.
Her practice investigates painting as a temporal field, where memory is encountered through the emergence of forms. Through layered processes of drawing, painting, obscuring, and revision, she develops surfaces in which gestures emerge, recede, and remain embedded within strata, forming compositions where multiple temporal states coexist.
Her work often begins with spontaneous drawing informed by movement and remembered experience. These gestures are repeatedly reworked and partially concealed, allowing the image to shift and take on new meaning. Paint functions as surface time, embedding drawing within a structure of duration. Figures emerge within this layered ground as provisional condensations of time. Some retain a resonance with memory, while others detach and become autonomous formations within the painting. This instability reflects her central concern: how memory is transformed through time, allowing new forms of presence to emerge.
